Cat Progressive
Discipline
We believe all students can behave appropriately at all community activities. Therefore the following
discipline guidelines will be in effect.
LEVEL 1
Each grade level has a set of “house” rules that applies to every class in
that grade level. While
the exact “house” rules vary between grade level, they all follow a 4 step process that involves a warning, call
home, parent conference and finally referral to the principal.
The office also contains a 4 step process that will be in effect for incidents
that happen before or after school, breaks and lunchtime.
LEVEL 2
After the fourth offense at the classroom level, the student will be referred
to the principal for further action. The office will retain the student for the rest of that class period.
Further action is at the discretion of the principal and may include detention,
in-school suspension on Wednesdays, parent conference, or suspension.
THE “CAT BOX”
The Cat Box is Holt’s in-school suspension area.
Students are referred to the Cat Box by the principal.
This may be done after a student is on the 4th offense from a particular teacher, 5 cumulative tardies, a cut (a cut is considered when
the student is more than 20 minutes late for the period without excuse), the student’s actions warrant more than
detention, but less than full suspension, or any other offense deemed worthy of an assignment to the Cat Box. Students and parents
will be notified when a Cat Box has been assigned.
Cat Box is held every Wednesday in the dining commons.
During this time students will be responsible for completing their normal
days work and when that is completed, assisting the school in its beautification program or any other community
service type activity.
Should a student accumulate 3 Cat Box days, the student will then be suspended
out of school for each subsequent offense.
These days count as a suspension day on the student’s attendance record.
The following incidents will be referred directly to the principal
for the appropriate action.
1.
Fighting
2. Possession
of tobacco
3. Endangering actions toward others
4. Theft
/ Receiving of stolen property
5. Vandalism
or malicious mischief
6. Violation of closed campus (leaving campus without permission)
7.
Threatening, intimidating, harassing, sexual harassment or hate motivated
behavior.
1st incident – two day suspension
2nd
incident – five day suspension
Possessing, selling, or otherwise furnishing a firearm, when
an Aspire employee verified firearm possession, brandishing a knife, sale of controlled substances, and committing
or attempting to commit sexual assault or committing sexual battery
Recommendation for Expulsion
Causing serious physical injury to another person, possession
of any knife, explosive, other dangerous object, controlled substances, robbery or extortion, assault or battery
upon a school employee.
Attendance
Students are responsible for attending school with a positive attitude towards
learning as evidenced by regular punctual attendance.
School law requires that students attend full-time classes until they are
eighteen years of age. Students
may leave school early, with parent permission, by passing a proficiency exam.
Dates and requirements are available upon request.
Credit for attendance will be limited to actual attendance.
Parents and students are urged to schedule medical appointments after school
hours. Vacation
and out-of-town trips should not be scheduled during school hours.
Tardies
A student will be marked tardy if they are not in the classroom when the class
starts.
After every 5 total tardies, a student will be assigned to the Cat Box.
After 5 cumulative tardies a notice will be sent home and a parent conference
scheduled to address the issue.
Cutting Class
A student is considered to be cutting
class if they arrive any time after 20 minutes into the duration of the class.
If a student makes the choice to cut a class, they will automatically be assigned
to the Cat Box.
Suspensions
For the first suspension that the student receives, the student may make up
the work missed, but must turn it all in on the 1st day back after the suspension or no credit will be given.
For any subsequent suspension, no make up work will be allowed.
Clearing Absences
Absences may be cleared in one of
two ways:
1.
Call made by administrative assistant or parent notifying
school prior to return.
2.
Parent note or call on day of return.
Verified Excused Absences
Examples of verifiable absences are:
personal illness, Dr. appointments, funeral services, religious holiday or activity.
A written note from the parent will be used as acceptable verification of
appointment or activity. When
verification is present the student will be allowed to make up work.
It is the student’s responsibility for getting the work from each individual
teacher. Time
to make up work and the amount given for make-up work is at the discretion of the individual teacher. If the absence is left
unverified for 7 days, the absence will turn into an unexcused absence.

Grades
Grades for students will be based on rubrics. The standard for rubrics is as follows: exceeds the standard, meets the standard, approaching the standard, emerging competency, and no evidence. These will show up on the student’s report cards as ES, MS, AS, EC, or NE. The class syllabus and rubrics that will be used are available in the office or on the website for review. When calculating the grades for each class, the rubrics for each of the five habits will be used.
Assessments
A variety of assessments are used in the high school. These assessments include Aspire Public Schools in-house testing, STAR testing, SAT, PSAT, AP, ACT, CAHSEE, in class assessments and exhibitions.
