Aspire Schools Exceed Targets on State Tests

In 2004-2005, all 10 Aspire schools far exceeded their state mandated API targets. The average growth for all schools was nearly 50 points, surpassing Aspire schools average state growth target by more than 8 times. In comparison, the average growth statewide was 20 API points. Aspire's highlights include API point gains of nearly 70 by Wilson Prep in Oakland, River Oaks Charter Academy in Stockton, and Capitol Heights Academy in Sacramento.

How did we do it?
This impressive growth is the direct result of tireless efforts by our dedicated educators, and is a validation of Aspire's model. Specifically in the 2004-05 school year, educators across the organization significantly increased their use of data to ensure classroom practices were aligned with students' needs. Across the organization, teams of educators conducted "Cycles of Inquiry" in which teachers analyzed student performance on mini-assessments of specific standards and then used that information to refine their approaches to target individual student needs. More rapid use of data was facilitated by the introduction of Edusoft, a web-based assessment platform. In addition to Aspire's practice of personalizing instruction in the classroom and cultivating a culture of College for Certain¢ē, additional support for students below grade level was provided via more before- and after-school tutoring and the services of literacy specialists.

Why does this matter?
API results are the single more visible measure of student academic performance in California. Our test results demonstrate that our students are receiving a solid foundation of academic preparation. Importantly, the results also affect the opportunities of our students to gain entry into the college of their choice, because a school's for college preparation and academic rigor can affect the perception of a college admission officer. The scores also create pride and increased support from our families, which in turn further strengthens the school community. In the communities where Aspire chooses to operate its schools, these results demonstrate that any child can succeed, given proper support, a sound education program, and the inspiration to achieve.
