COMMUNITY SERVICE AT WILSON PREP

Community service is an important part of the Aspire secondary curriculum. Students in low-income communities typically tend to be the recipients of service learning rather than its donors. "Service learning" allows students to see themselves as pro-active agents in serving local community needs, reversing the donor-recipient relationship typical in under-resourced communities. Service learning also offers opportunities for authentic learning – connecting academic instruction to real-world experiences – which can be very helpful for students with stressful family situations who may question the value of academics in isolation.

Wilson Prep 10th graders are providing homework help at local elementary schools and after-school programs. For each of them, this will be their second year at their placements. Next year they’ll begin their internships with local companies. Here are a few of them:

“I learned to be more patient. It took the kids a whole year to trust me, but I wasn’t willing to give up. Now they trust me, and I can really help them”.
